about

"Steve Deaton went back to his musical roots for his newest record—roots wrapped around loud car stereos and ZZ Top on an eight-track tape. . . .the band's new record showcases a number of [musical styles], moving from chiming power pop to boogie rock to rockabilly." -- Larry Morrisey, Jackson Free Press

“This should be blasting out of every car radio in America, frankly . . . one of my top five faves for the year.” — Steve Simels, PowerPop

"It's such a cool record." - Will Kimbrough

"The sound is very much like The Raspberries and Cheap Trick, done in a tight 70’s FM style. . . .This is a band that understands the need for more cowbell and makes its debut a ton of fun. . . . highly recommended album!" - Powerpopaholic

The trio's debut LP is a blend of rockin' styles from the glory days of FM radio. Steve Deaton's songwriting is nostalgic without being simply derivative, and his narrative lyrics introduce the listener to equally reminiscent and well-developed characters: the high school "Duke," pot-smoking Christian rockers, depressive alcoholics, the charming drug-pushing brother, and even an iconic Rick Derringer. In addition to seven Deaton originals, the band pays tribute to some heroes with three reworked cover tunes: a psychedelic rendering of The Nazz, a Who-style romp through a Buck Owens classic, and a barnburner from little known Sun Records rockabilly cat Jumpin' Gene Simmons (who also happened to be Deaton's second cousin).

Track Name: Duke of High School
There was this pipe smokin’ dude back in my high school
That all the freakies called the Duke
He had a big black Pontiac, a bad boss 8-track
A case of AC/DC tunes

(He’s alright)
I feel like a star
(He’s alright)
In the back of his car
When we ride in his Pontiac
(There he goes)
In a Pontiac
(What’s he smoking?)
Ain’t Captain Black
(Rock and rollin’)
He’s the Duke of High School

He had a big army coat to smuggle in smokes
Hey, come and see what Duke has got
So after fifth period, we’d all get delirious
And cut out to the car in the parking lot

Oh, well, the Duke of cool, he dropped out of school
And took a job at the corner quick stop
We all went to college, got stuffed full of knowledge
But every weekend we came home where the Duke was boss
Track Name: Watching You Drown
Here we go
The minute you walk in the door
We know what we’re in for
We know the story
There you go
You’re gonna go it alone
It won’t go well
We know you’re sorry

Hey, hey you, yeah you
What we supposed to do
Now that you’re blue
We’ve all been waiting around
Watching you drown
There’s nothing that we can do

Here we are
As you drive up in your car
We know where you’ve been
We know you’re sorry

When you are a falling star
When you are a big star
When you are a falling star
You’ve got nowhere to fall
Yeah, nowhere to fall
Nowhere at all

There you are
Driving away in your car
There’s no goodbye
We know it’s over
Track Name: Beautiful Believers
Just out of high school
Well, they formed a band
Called the Beautiful Believers
Gonna save this land
Four young disciples
Far from the flock
Well, they smoke and drink
And play Christian rock

John plays the bass
And Matt plays guitar
Mark is the drummer
And Luke is the star
The van’s loaded up
Bound for Ohio
Gonna preach and meet the girls
At the all-ages show

Meet the Beautiful Believers
‘Til the pious pull the plug
They will rock the kids for Jesus
Meet the Beautiful Believers
With faith and fifteen bucks
They’ll come coasting into Cleveland

They toke a little hash
And drink a lot of beer
They preach a lot of love
And not a lot of fear
They don’t fear the Baptists
Or the Republicans
They don’t fear the fascists
Flick a bird to the Man

They were making good time
And they scored some good weed
Then they stopped at a quick stop
Somewhere in Tennessee
John read the bible
While Mark got some smokes
They filled up with gas
And the Holy Ghost
Track Name: Open My Eyes
Underneath your gaze I was found in
The haze I'm wandering around in
I am lost in the dark of my own room
And I can't see a thing but the fire in your eyes
Clear my eyes, make me wise
Or is all I believe in lies
I don't know when or where to go
And I can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes

I've been told by some you'll forget me
The thought doesn't upset me
I am blind to whatever they're saying
And all I can see is the fire in your eyes
Clear my eyes, make me wise
Or is all I believe in lies
I really don't know when or where to go
And I can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes

Can't believe that it's on your mind
To leave me behind

Clear my eyes, make me wise
Or is all I believe in lies
I really don't know when or where to go
And I can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Can't see a thing 'til you open my eyes
Oh my eyes
Oh my eyes
Track Name: The Big Cheese
Ja-pan is on the radar
Earthquake, tsunami, and a nuclear reactor

Hey, hey, call the Big Cheese
Big Cheese, some assistance please
Hey, hey, call the Big Cheese
Big Cheese, well then come back up on ‘ese
Everybody’s talking ‘bout the Big Cheese, baby
But He ain’t done nothing for me

Prowler is on the loose
Tomorrow’s got the ace card, waitin’ with the noose

“Man-child, you callin’ Me?
You’re goin’ straight to voicemail; the world is a machine”
Track Name: Liar
I’m writin’ this song on a whiskey bag
That I know she’ll find in the trash
I go to the trouble to hide my ganja
Though I’m sure she knows where it’s stashed

I got nothing to hide
When she looks into my eyes
I got nothing to hide
‘Cause she knows I’m a liar

Got me some mags from my old man
That he bought from the Super Stop
Been hidin’ them things since ‘79
In the wall back behind the clock

Trust me, trust me, trust me, trust me

Been twenty-one years since the preacher man
Said, “Son, do you say I do?”
It’s true I lie about a lot of shit
But she knows that shit was true
Track Name: Tall Dark Stranger
Beware of a tall dark stranger
If he comes ridin' into your town
A tall dark stranger is danger
(Danger)
So don't let no dark stranger hang around

For he can capture the heart of a woman
With one glance from his flashing brown eyes
Like a bolt from the blue, he can steal her from you
Then jump up on his pony and ride, ride, ride

So beware of a tall dark stranger
If he comes ridin' into your town
A tall dark stranger is danger
(Danger)
So don't let no dark stranger hang around

They say a tall dark stranger is a demon
And that a devil rides closely by his side
With no warning he can strike, like a thief in the night
Then jump up on his pony and ride, ride, ride

So beware of a tall dark stranger
If he comes ridin' into your town
A tall dark stranger is danger
(Danger)
So don't let no dark stranger hang around
So don't let no dark stranger hang around
Track Name: You Got To
My brother Jimmy’s skipping parole
Rolls into town in a brown Monte Carlo
He says, “Meet me tonight at the Quality Inn”
He’s been somewhere in Michigan

And all the children know
When Jimmy comes to town
That’s when people go, go downtown
Where Jimmy can spread the love around
And everybody knows
That when Jimmy comes to town
You know that you got to
You got to, you got to
Keep in on the sly

Says, “Tell all the friends that you got
Meet me tonight at the vacant lot
Tell Sara if you see her I said
I got the goods from Detroit Mohammed

Tomorrow Jimmy’s gone, the folks never know
They gave him up a long, long time ago
Leaves me a note that says, “Take care of Pop”
And a little gift in a freezer gallon Ziploc
Track Name: Derringer Lays It Down
In 1964 was boy wonder
That everybody knew as Rick Zehringer
(He was hanging on Sloopy with some real McCoys)
And soon he was chartin’ with some big boys
And everybody know when the Boy come to town
That Rick Derringer wasn’t fuckin’ around
Gonna lay it down; he ain’t fuckin’ around

It wasn’t too long he was stealing the show
When he made some funky blues with some funky albinos
Kinda shy, but the ladies knew who
Gonna whip out the 12-inch Hootchie Coo
And everybody knew when the Boy come to town
That Rick Derringer wasn’t fuckin’ around
Gonna lay it down; he ain’t fuckin’ around

Now the old man rocks even without the drugs
‘Cause he found a good woman and he found the Lord
And you still better go when the Boy come to town
‘Cause Rick Derringer ain’t fuckin’ around
Gonna lay it down
He still lays it down
May be born again but he ain’t fuckin’ around
Track Name: Peroxide Blonde in a Hopped Up Model Ford
Well, I went out cattin’ on a Friday night
I was dressed to kill, I was a-lookin’ for a fight
I looked in the mirror, just a-waitin’ for the light
I saw a hot chick that really looked right

I’m draggin’, draggin’ down Main once more
With a peroxide blonde in a hopped up model Ford

Well, I pulled on over, she asked me for a ride
She moved real close, sittin’ side-by-side
I looked out the window and to my surprise
Was a hotrod Ford just a-passin’ me by

Well, we drug down Main, just to make a scene
I barked my tires when the light turned green
I slapped it to the floor, let out on the clutch
And what was left on the road, well - it wasn't very much
We flew out of town, we were side by side
Twin carburetors were open wide
Tires were smoke, it started to whine
I’m tellin’ ya, that blonde, she left me way behind!

Now I’m never-never-never draggin’ down Main no more, ooh-ooh
With a peroxide blonde in a hopped up model Ford.
